Every time I pass by a fast food franchise, I often just shake my head.

So you want to start a business, and you’re trying to decide between a well-known franchise, like McDonald’s or Subway, or starting an e-commerce business selling on Amazon, then expanding to Walmart and TikTok later.

With the exception of Chick-fil-A, for the money invested, the opportunity and return is far greater going the e-commerce route – start selling on Amazon.

Take a look at how much it costs to start a fast food franchise:

And for that investment, look how much revenue the typical fast food franchise makes per location:

So a typical Mickey D’s makes between $2.7 million to $4.5 million annually depending on location with today’s inflated prices.

In January 2012, the price of a Big Mac was approximately $4.18. As of January 2024, the price has risen to around an average of $5.69.

So using a 2012 breakdown of costs (one I can easily find), which should be similar today on less sales, here’s how much a McDonald’s franchise makes:

So about a 5.7% operating income for a multi-million dollar investment. 👎🏽

✅ With A LOT less than a million dollars, you can do much better than this selling on Amazon FBA with your own brand.

Even with today’s competitive environment and rising costs in fulfillment, logistics and PPC, you should be able to land between a 12% and 25% margin selling FBA, assuming you do it right and not the way a lot of the YouTube gurus tell you to.

Amazon is omitting star ratings and reviews in a lot of the search results on the mobile app. The reviews only appear on the PDP after you click the product:

Also, Igor Nuhanovic stumbled upon this test Amazon is doing too with scrollable main images, letting you see ALL the images on a product without clicking.

This could affect how you design and organize your image stack.

FOOD is CULTURE

Some people like to only eat what is known and familiar when they travel.

Or they day dream watching The Bear.

Not me.

One of the first things I do in a new country is walk a grocery store. You can learn so much about a country and its culture where it buys its food - sometimes more than the monuments and attractions.

I have had a guide in Morocco try to drop me off for lunch at a restaurant with a menu in seven languages. I told him “no thanks.” I told him I’m going where he and the driver are eating lunch - a dive joint down a dirty alley (delicious).

I’m on a mission to eat at as many of the Top 100 Restaurants in the world I can in the next five years. My first Michelin 3-star experience was years ago at the French Laundry in Yountville, CA. Ever since then I’ve been hooked.

In 2022, I took my then wife to Peru (we flew from Texas) for her birthday just to eat at 3 of them (Peruvian food was her favorite).

We flew in Friday night, ate at one top place, ate lunch at a second the next day (Maido, #5 in the world - best meal ever), then at a third top 100 place that night. Then we caught a red-eye back to Austin. A 36-hour trip to eat.

After attending the World Cup finale in Qatar in 2022, we headed to Dubai to eat at Sublimotion. It’s considered the most expensive restaurant in the world (they also have one in Ibiza). It was absolutely an amazing visual and culinary experience.

High on my fly-to-eat list now is Copenhagen, Denmark. There are three of these bad boys in the top 50 there I want to check out.

And just a fun fact. Did you know that cities/regions have to PAY to have their restaurants rated with Michelin stars? Tourism boards do it because it helps bring in money to the local economy.

Florida forked over $150K for Orlando-Miami-Tampa, and Austin, Dallas, Ft Worth, Houston and San Antonio, Texas just paid $90K each to get their restaurants rated this year.

One last nugget: Tokyo is home to a whopping 180 Michelin-starred restaurants, with 12 three-star establishments, 32 with two stars, and 136 one-stars. New York has the most is the US - 67 starred joints.
