📛 FACT CHECKING AMAZON SELLER SOCIAL MEDIA
A chart titled “Made in China, Sold on Amazon” spread across social media earlier this month claiming that “71% of goods on Amazon come from China.”

Where the figure really comes from
The chart pulls from a 2024 Jungle Scout / ECDB survey of 1,064 third-party sellers—a tiny slice of Amazon’s 9.7 million global seller accounts.
Percentages on the chart add up to 162% because each seller could report products from more than one country.
What “71%” actually means
It shows that 71% of the surveyed sellers have at least one item sourced from China, not that 71% of Amazon’s entire catalog is Chinese-made!
Broader marketplace data
Chinese-based sellers generated 28% of Amazon’s 2023 GMV, up from 19% in 2018 according to Statista.
By 2024, more than half of Amazon’s top sellers were headquartered in China, but seller location doesn’t necessarily match product origin says Marketplace Pulse.
The viral “71%” claim lacks context: it reflects a small seller survey, not Amazon’s product mix. Reliable data shows China is critically important—but its share of Amazon sales value is far below 71%. Keep the nuance in mind when discussing sourcing, competitive dynamics, or tariff strategy with your teams and audiences.
No doubt Amazon e-commerce sellers are facing unprecedented times with the tariff situation. The new tariffs, especially from China is a major gut punch for many sellers.
