[ BDSN ] 🥷 Secret fix that boosts Amazon listings
STUMP BEZOS14% of the the top 50 retailers in North America are European based companies. What percentage are USA and Chinese based? [ Answer at bottom of email ] |
🧾 THE TAX MAN is COMING for YOUR IMPORTED GOODS
With Donald Trump's return to the White House in January, Amazon sellers and importers are facing the possibility of significant changes in trade policies, tariffs, and de minimis thresholds.
Here's a comprehensive summary of the potential impacts and actions being taken:
Proposed Tariff Changes
Trump has proposed several major tariff changes that could dramatically affect importers and Amazon sellers:
A 60% tariff on Chinese imports
A 10-20% universal tariff on all imported goods, regardless of origin
A 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico
These proposed tariffs would push U.S. import duty rates back to 1930s-era levels, potentially stoking inflation and drastically reordering supply chains.
De Minimis Threshold Changes
In addition to tariff changes, there are potential modifications to the de minimis threshold:
The current U.S. de minimis threshold is $800, allowing duty-free imports for shipments valued below this amount.
The Biden administration has proposed limiting the types of products eligible for de minimis exemption, particularly targeting goods in Section 201, 232, and 301 tariffs.
A Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on de minimis changes is expected to be issued by early December.

Actions Importers Are Taking
Many businesses are taking preemptive measures to protect themselves:
Increasing inventory: Some companies are ramping up shipments from China by 50% or more to build up stock before potential tariffs hit.
Accelerating orders: Businesses are placing larger orders earlier to ensure delivery before Chinese New Year and potential tariff implementation.
Diversifying supply chains: Some companies are considering moving production out of China (and Mexico) to avoid potential tariffs.
Potential Effects on Sellers
The proposed tariffs and de minimis changes could have several significant impacts on Amazon sellers:
Increased costs: Sellers may face substantially higher costs of goods sold (COGS), potentially shrinking margins to single digits.
Cash flow challenges: Current inventory funding models may become inadequate as costs rise, requiring sellers to reassess their financial strategies.
Pricing pressure: Sellers may need to raise prices to maintain profitability, potentially affecting their competitiveness.
Supply chain disruption: Existing supplier relationships may need to be restructured or diversified to mitigate tariff impacts.
Inventory management: With higher import costs, strategic inventory control becomes crucial to avoid tying up capital in devaluing stock.
Key Areas for Seller Adaptation
To navigate these changes successfully, sellers will need to focus on:
Cash Flow Mastery: Developing more sophisticated cash flow models to adapt to market changes.
Supply Chain Sophistication: Building stronger, more flexible supplier relationships with favorable terms.
Strategic Inventory Control: Optimizing inventory planning to balance costs and market demand.
Global Implications
The potential changes in U.S. trade policies are also influencing other countries:
Mexico is considering imposing tariffs on small imported goods from China, particularly targeting e-commerce platforms like Temu, Shein, and AliExpress.
If you manufacture all your products in the USA, you may be able to save 5% on your income taxes if Trump’s promises come to fruition.

🌎 STATS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Scott Needham of SmartScout recently pointed out on LinkedIn that traffic for both Jungle Scout and Helium 10 is down 50%.
Interest in selling on Amazon grew until the end of 2022 at which point traffic has now moved down.
He says this tells him three things:
1. Fewer new Amazon Sellers. The get rich quick on Amazon fever has softened. Interest in Amazon FBA has hit its peak. The lambo slinging gurus aren't convincing new sellers to jump in the ring.
2. Large sellers keep growing. While interest from the masses is down, it's still a thriving industry. Amazon's marketplace revenue has grown 10-20% in this same time period. No need for doom and gloom. The winners are still winning.
3. The fact that both of them are trending this direction means there's little they can do about it. Market forces are stronger than individual company performance. The new sellers aren't flocking to their services like they used to.
