šŸ My Death-Defying Dance with Destiny

The very essence of life is to dance on the edge, to flirt with danger, to embrace the unknown.

A few years ago I found myself on the brink of the most exhilarating adventure of my life.

The night before my death-defying journey, my girlfriend (future ex-wife) pleaded with me, her voice trembling with fear, to reconsider.

Imagine a road stretching 43 miles, every inch a testament to those who dared and lost.

šŸŖ¦ Tombstones and crosses āœļø, silent witnesses to the road's deadly allure, lined my path.

3,000 foot fall offs with crosses everywhere

On one side, majestic cliffs stood tall, with waterfalls cascading down, turning the dirt track into a treacherous, slippery snake. On the other side, a heart-stopping abyss plummeted 3,000 feet, where the skeletal remains of burned out cars lay entwined with the trees, a grim reminder of the road's unforgiving nature.

The path was narrow, barely 10 feet across and room for just one vehicle, with wicked hairpin bends waiting to test one's mettle.

And the real kicker? This treacherous trail was open to traffic from both directions.

The dance of death ensued when two vehicles met, with one having to reverse to a tiny ledge, hanging precariously over the void. It happened three times to me.

Just days before my venture, a tragic tale unfolded: four cyclists lost control on a blind bend, sending them spiraling into the abyss below, their journey ending in a heart-wrenching splatter.

Welcome to the North Yungas Road, or as the world knows it, "The Death Road" in the Andes northeast of La Paz, Bolivia.

Two way traffic on the 43-mile Death Road

Constructed by Paraguayan prisoners in the 1930s, this road was the lifeline connecting the Amazonian heart of Bolivia to its capital for seven decades. Its treacherous turns often hidden by thick fog claimed nearly 200 souls monthly.

By 2004, a safer alternative was carved out, diverting much of the local traffic. But for thrill-seekers, the original road's siren call was irresistible.

From dizzying heights of 15,260 feet to the sultry lows of 3,900 feet, the road promised an adrenaline rush like no other.

My guide, a seasoned veteran of this perilous path, shared tales of touristsā€™ excitement turning to sheer terror within minutes, begging to turn back. But not me. I was determined, albeit with a pounding heart and sweaty palms.

Three hours and 43 miles later, I emerged, alive and invigorated. In the words of the indomitable Helen Keller, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all."

So, as you carve your path in the e-commerce world, remember: to truly live is to dare, to risk, to leap into the unknown. You never know what rewards await.

Welcome Paul Rafelson to the Billion Dollar Dream 100

Every Thursday I announce a new member of the Billion Dollar Dream 100. These are the people you should follow and get to know in our industry. They are announced in no particular order.

Paul Rafelson is todayā€™s inductee into the Billion Dollar Dream 100.

Navigating complex legal challenges when it comes to sales tax, compliance, intellectual property issues, and Prop 65 warnings is not easy.

Working with an attorney who understands how Amazon businesses operate and the applicable laws that protect them is essential.

Paul is one of those guys.

Heā€™s a former Amazon seller and Fortune 500 Corporate tax attorney. His journey into e-commerce law began with a blog post he wrote in 2017, which led to the establishment of his own private law practice.

Now heā€™s the leading advocate for Amazon and e-commerce businesses in the courts. He understands sellersā€™ pain through experience: he sold on Amazon to put himself through law school.

Paul is the driving reason there are marketplace sales tax laws now, meaning you no longer have to worry about collecting sales tax for 45 different states.

In 2018 he founded the Online Merchants Guild to help third party sellers get their voices heard. He has participated in Congressional antitrust investigations and filed multiple lawsuits against states on behalf of the seller community.

One of his biggest wins has been preventing states, like Pennsylvania for example, from forcing non-Pennsylvania businesses to pay back taxes on sales made through Amazon FBA.

It was the first time ever a court ruled Amazon merchants cannot be held liable for sales or income tax within that state because they have inventory located in an Amazon warehouse in said state.

Paul likes to say limitations drive creativity, while constraints inspire innovative thinking. Thatā€™s how he has helped a lot of sellers exit with better seller protections and more cash.

Proper legal advice can be prohibitively costly for many sellers, so Paul founded Sellerbasics in 2020 to solve that problem.

For a monthly fee of $99, you get comprehensive, high-quality legal and consulting help for things impacting your account health, such as IP claims, inauthentic complaints and account suspensions.

Congratulations Paul and thanks for what you do for the community.

šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø AMAZON TAKES 45% of EVERY $ FROM SELLERS

Amazon will collect $185 billion in marketplace fees in 2023

Amazonā€™s dominance of online retail means it can exploit its power as a gatekeeper to pocket a growing cut of the revenue earned by sellers.

In the first half of 2023, using a variety of fees, Amazon took 45 percent of sellersā€™ revenue in the U.S.

These exorbitant fees make it nearly impossible for small businesses and other sellers to sustain a viable business online. 90%+ fail.

2 minutes in Bolivia

Bolivia, a landlocked nation in South America, offers a rich tapestry of experiences for the intrepid traveler.

Locals have a deep-rooted tradition of chewing coca leaves, which aids in acclimatizing to the high altitudes and provides a burst of energy.

The country's history is a blend of indigenous cultures and Spanish colonial influence. The Aymara people, with their vibrant woolen attire, are a significant part of Bolivia's demographic tapestry. Their traditions and rituals, such as offerings to the goddess Pachamama, are still practiced today.

Bolivia's cities, like La Paz, the world's highest capital at 13,000 feet, are surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, from the mysterious ruins of Tiwanaku (precursor civilization to the Incas) to the perilous North Yungas Road, infamously known as "The Death Road."

Lake Titicaca is the largest lake in South America (larger than the entire island of Puerto Rico). It is also the highest lake in the world, sitting at 12,500 feet (3,810 meters) above sea level, and one of the deepest, with depths reaching 1,200 feet in some places.

In La Paz's Mercado de las Brujas, or Witches' Market. Here you can pick up llama fetuses, dried frogs, soapstone figurines and aphrodisiac formulas and amulets, as well as other ingredients you may require for Aymara rituals.

Bolivia's crown jewel is the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat. This vast expanse of white offers surreal vistas, especially during sunset when the sky's reflection creates a dreamlike panorama.
